Johan Peitz - Let's make SOMETHING

27Nov/103

Something else entirely…

This didn't really go according to plan. I haven't worked on the project for weeks and as an obvious result there as been no progress. In a desperate attempt to get rolling again I am going to do something that usually doesn't solve anything, namely start another game project.

As you can read in my previous post I was stuck in a very structural mindset and I still am. Since I have failed to get out of that mindset for now, I intend to make the most of it - engine building! The platform engine for the water cannon game is pretty stable and I want to do something else. So I'm dusting off an old project of mine, a remake of Millennium's The Adventures of Robin Hood (1991)!

It is a game that totally captivated me when I was young. I've replayed it quite a lot since and it still a great game! It's all about being Robin Hood and trying to get your castle back in various indirect and tricky ways. The gameplay is quite clunky and the user interface is hard to understand but it takes place in an amazing little living world that really stands out. It's really the simulation of the world around Robin that makes the game so compelling. Hard to explain, you'll have to take my word on it.

Anyway, I haven't worked on the Sherwood Adventures (the name of my remake) in a while but I am using the data files of the original to build the world. I intend to make my own graphics for the game eventually, but for now the old ones will do. In the image below Robin is watching as the monks build their monastery. (Where all the bodies of your slain enemies eventually end up (accompanied by a detailed funeral).)

That's about it for now. I hope to get the old code up and running pretty quick but I think there might be some crayy stuff I will need to rewrite. As always. Hope to tell you more soon!

  1. Let me know if you need help. I have unique insight to the original game source code.

    • Thanks for the offer. I haven’t looked at this project for a while though. Maybe I’ll return to it in the future.

      • Can you send your e-mail to robin [a] nivs.dk. I’d like to know how far you got. Also if you managed to decode the rule files from the original game? I have the source for the Rome, Pathway to Power (the sequel) but some fundamental things has changed. The source were provided by Steve Grand himself, and I am doing a remake of the Robin Hood game for Windows and later a html5 browser version.
